For many years now around the holidays, if one was in Jefferson City at the right time, something special was available. For a couple of nights each year, the Missouri Governor’s Mansion would be open for candle light tours.

But this year, citing “security concerns” timed around unrest in Ferguson, that tradition is being put on hold. A spokesperson for the Missouri Office Of Administration confirmed the mansion would be closed in an email to reporters, but was unresponsive to a question Wednesday about the exact reason.

A special division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol provides security to Nixon and the mansion, the official residence of the governor.

According to the office of administration, the candlelight tours “are normally held in conjunction with the Downtown Living Windows event and the annual Jefferson City Jaycees Christmas Parade.” The spokesperson said, “Visitors will still be able to view the lighted exterior of the Mansion, as well as the lit Christmas tree on the Mansion grounds.”
