Democratic Senator accues Nixon of ignoring Democrats in Boeing talks

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Chairman of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, was criticized Gov. Jay Nixon on Tuesday for not reaching out to Black Democrats about his package to attempt to lure Boeing to Missouri.

Speaking at a committee hearing for the Boeing package, Nasheed criticized the Democratic governor for only reaching out to legislative Republicans.

“I think someone in the governor’s office needs to be fired,” she said. “The reason I say this is we’re dealing with a piece of legislation of this magnitude and he didn’t reach out to the Black Caucus.”

Nasheed added, “I don’t know if he just takes advantage of people or what.”

Nixon on Monday met for more than an hour with Senate Republicans after hosting a similar meeting earlier in the day with House Republicans.

Channing Ansley, a spokeswoman for Nixon, said in a statement Tuesday night, “the Governor has met with legislative leaders on a bipartisan basis, and will continue to work with legislators of both parties.”
