JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Embattled State Rep. Steve Webb, R-St. Louis, announced his resignation on Monday following allegations that he had stolen campaign funds during his time leading the legislative Black Caucus.
“I strongly believe that the allegations against me will work themselves out. It’s only right and fair that my family, the people and my colleagues not be negatively be impacted by the distractions these legal challenges present,” he said. “With that being said, it’s with a heavy heart that I will be resigning my office effective immediately.”
The charges issued against Webb last month include a felony stealing charge for allegedly soliciting campaign funds under a false premise for personal use, and seven misdemeanor charges for separate alleged violations of Missouri Ethics Commission Rules governing campaign finance.
The felony stealing charge came when Webb allegedly solicited $3,000 from Community Loans of America under the premise that it was for the Missouri Black Caucus’s campaign fund, but instead allegedly used it for personal purposes. Webb’s attorney have pledged to defend from the charges.
