House Democrats critical of Speaker’s side business

As the Kansas City Star reported on Friday, Jones has earned more than $1,000 from the company since 2010. Jones, a Republican, told the paper there were “only two instances” where he received payment from the company in the last three years. He initially told The Star that he provided “basic, rudimentary Legislature 101 advice” to his clients. Later, the paper wrote, Jones clarified that he misspoke and said the company was another way for him to provide private legal advice on the side from his day job as an attorney for Doster Ullom.

“Although you initially told The Star that Missouri Freedom Alliance performs legal consulting on the legislative process, you later retracted that statement and said the firm only does legal work unrelated to legislative or governmental matters,” House Minority Floor Leader Jacob Hummel, D-St. Louis, wrote. “That may be true, but your shifting explanation coupled with your refusal to divulge your clients or any information regarding the work performed makes it difficult for Missourians to take you at your word.”

“For the good of the House of Representatives, we ask that you take all necessary steps to publicly clear the air regarding this matter,” Hummel added.

Jones, speaking with The Star, said, “I don’t want to be evasive, but ethically, I can’t talk about clients and my legal work.”

For its part, the company does not have a website or a physical address. Instead, it is registered to an address that is shared by his district and campaign office.
