– While Attorney General Chris Koster remains on the sidelines about Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of Republican-backed tax cut legislation, the other two statewide Democrats are making clear their support of Nixon’s veto.
Secretary of State Jason Kander and state Treasurer Clint Zweifel told PoliticMo Monday they oppose the legislation, HB 253.
“HB 253 would jeopardize Missouri’s AAA credit rating. We have maintained our stellar rating through both Democratic and Republican administrations because of decades of cooperation on fiscal decision making,” Zweifel said in a statement. “This measure would have immediate and lasting impact on our state – increasing costs for communities and making our state less inviting for businesses.”
While Kander has made his intent to run for reelection clear, Zweifel’s political future is uncertain. He is term limited in 2016, and earlier this year indicated that he would not challenge Koster, who has publicly mulled a 2016 gubernatorial bid.
Their input comes as Nixon continues his campaign against a September veto override attempt. On Tuesday, Nixon has events planned in southeast Missouri and Lee’s Summit to highlight his opposition to the bill.
