Gov. Jay Nixon is on his fourth visit to Afghanistan as governor, his office said Saturday.
Nixon made the unannounced trip as part of his role serving on the Council of Governors, “which addresses matters pertaining to the National Guard and homeland security,” his office added. He had maintained his normal schedule in Missouri through Thursday.
Nixon is part of a delegation of governors and Defense Department officials to visit troops and receive briefings on counterterrorism and security issues, the New York Times wrote Saturday. Nixon joined New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam, and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval.
No other details about the trip were available on Saturday, a spokesman said. Nixon is set to brief reporters about his trip by phone on Sunday morning.
