Over the weekend in Rolla, the St. Louis Democrat told party faithful he is “seriously considering” at a run for attorney general, according to the Rolla Daily News.
“In 2016, I am considering a run at attorney general,” he said. “I am very seriously considering making that race.”
Only one candidate – State Sen. Kurt Schaefer, a Republican – has already announced a campaign for the post. On Tuesday, Sifton deflected interest in his comments over the weekend.
“At the moment I am focused on helping fellow Democrats win their races in 2014 and preparing for the 2015 legislative session,” he said. “I will further consider 2016 after the election in November.”
Besides Sifton, no other Democrat has publicly discussed their interest in the post. While a handful of Republicans in the Legislature have made statewide intentions known, Democrats have taken a quieter approach while watching and waiting to see what happens this election year under new party leadership.
On the Republican side, House Speaker Tim Jones has indicated his interest in the post, and Josh Hawley, a former clerk for United State Chief Justice John Roberts who now teaches law at the University of Missouri, has been traveling the state speaking to Republicans hinting at his interest in a run.
