– Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback said Tuesday it was “good to hear” Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon “joining the discussion” about the economic border war between the two states, in response Nixon’s speech on Tuesday urging the two states to call a truce.
Brownback, a Republican, said in a statement that he has been open to resolving the issue for more than a year and has been in “active discussion” with Nixon, as well as members of the Missouri General Assembly “who are interested in putting an end to this ‘war.’”
“In Kansas, we are actively working with our mayors and civic leaders to build consensus around a process that is fair and equitable and allows both Kansas and Missouri to attract and retain business,” he said. “In the past year, all the net job growth in the KC metro area has occurred on the Kansas side. Economic policy in Kansas is designed to make our state competitive on a national and international basis through improved regulations, controlled spending and lower taxes.”
In remarks to the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Nixon, a Democrat, called for a voluntary moratorium within the region on the use of discretionary tax incentives where jobs are moving from state to state, as well as action from the legislatures in both states as well as the localities to freeze some tax credits.
