KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Speaking to Kansas City Democrats, Attorney General Chris Koster made his case for reelection touting his passion for the office and the law.
“I learned about the power of law — the influence it has on the lives of ordinary Missourians — in the halls of the Supreme Court,” Koster said, reflecting on his time working for former Attorney General William Webster.
Koster said while working with him over two decades years ago, he learned the importance of having “gray hair” in the office, “the cautious concern of older men and women.”
“I wanted and I aspired, maybe dreamed, that I would someday serve,” Koster said of the time working for Webster.
He said his election in 2008 fulfilled his dream from 25 years before, but used the anecdote to preface a jab at his likely opponent, St. Louis Republican Ed Martin.
“The gentleman that I’m running against decided that he wanted to be Attorney General about three months ago, after having declared his candidacy for two other federal positions in the nine months prior to three months ago,” he said. “I think that there is a place in this world for consistency and purpose.”
Martin, who spent many of his recent years as a Republican activist, is making denouncing Koster as “Obama’s lawyer” a key point of his campaign, referring to him as nothing more than a partisan office holder.
Koster, who switched from the Republican Party to the Democratic party in late 2007, said the office should be a post where the office holder governs from the ideological center.
