For governor campaign, Hanaway ends 2014 with $1.2 million in bank

BDbnwefCIAENX5B.jpg-largeJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – When former Republican House Speaker Catherine Hanaway announced her candidacy for governor last March, she said she did so, in part, to get a start on fundraising in an effort to compete with the financial strength of the likely Democratic candidate, Attorney General Chris Koster.

Hanaway launched her campaign last February. A year later, she has raised $1.4 million and has most of it – $1.28 million left in the bank, “a modern day record for any prior non-incumbent Republican gubernatorial candidate two years prior to election day,” her campaign said on Thursday.

“I am humbled by the outpouring of support from the Missourians who have invested in my campaign to restore leadership and faith in Missouri government,” Hanaway said in a statement. “I embarked on this journey almost a year ago to ensure my campaign was well positioned going into 2015.”

Of that $1.4 million Hanaway raised last year, $1 million essentially came from one single donor: St. Louis billionaire Rex Sinquefield. From Sinquefield, personally, Hanaway has received $890,000 — $90,000 of which from a set of $10,000 weekly installments. She received another $100,000 from the Sinquefield-funded Missouri Club for Growth.

Aside the Sinquefield money, Hanaway has raised $150,000 from large donors and other candidate committees — including Senate Leader Ron Richard and Senate President Tom Dempsey’s – and another $200,000 from smaller donors.
