Missouri gets nearly 40 percent of its general revenue from federal aid

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Lawmakers in Missouri’s Republican-led General Assembly are quick to criticize rules and spending passed along from Washington, D.C., but a new analysis shows Missouri to be a big beneficiary of federal funding.

A report from the nonpartisan Tax Foundation shows Missouri to be No. 5 nationally in terms of the percentage of federal dollars that make up a state’s annual general revenue budget. In Missouri’s case, 39 cents of every dollar – nearly 40 percent – comes from federal funding.

Missouri trails Mississippi (45.3 percent) Louisiana (44.0 percent), Tennessee (41.0 percent), and South Dakota (40.8 percent). At 20 percent, Alaska gets the smallest share of its general revenue from the federal government.
