House Majority Leader warns members veto session could run through Friday

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri House Majority Floor Leader John Diehl, R-St. Louis, warned members veto session could last through Friday of next week, as prepare lawmakers head back to the state Capitol next Wednesday.

When they convene on Wednesday morning, the House will swear in its new members who were elected in special elections last month. Then, they will get down to the business of considering more than 30 vetoed bills and more than 100 line-item vetoes to budget bills.

What will determine the extended length of time lawmakers stay in Jefferson City will be how legislative leaders decide to vote on Nixon’s vetoes to budget bills. Nixon has claimed the Legislature must go line by line, but lawmakers do not all agree.

The budget bills would start in the House. After they read in his veto message, the motion would be, “should this be enacted the objections of the governor not withstanding.” The governor’s objections are to different sections in the same bill. Lawmakers are still debating whether they can do all line-item vetoes in one bill all at once.

In a memo to members of the House on Thursday, Diehl said the swearings-in will take place on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. Diehl scheduled starting times of 9 a.m. for both Thursday and Friday.

“Thursday and Friday sessions are tentative, but BE prepared to stay until Friday,” the memo read.
