– Grover Norquist has made a name for himself in Washington, D.C., lobbying against tax increases on the federal level.

On Monday, Norquist will give his touch to the latest Missouri tax cut effort.

Norquist, a Washington-based lobbyist for Americans for Tax Reform, will join House Speaker Tim Jones for two events in favor of the legislature’s latest tax cut proposal, Senate Bill 509. Norquist, Jones, and United for Missouri’s Carl Beardon will visit Cape Girardeau and Springfield touting the latest tax cut bill.

The tax cut fight of 2014 is similar to the tax cut fight of 2013 – Democrats contend the bill would harm education funding, while Republicans claim it would boost business opportunity. The difference this year is a compressed timeline for the post-veto override effort, and so far, Republicans seem to have the advantage.

Last year, during the fight over House Bill 253 (a larger, more controversial tax cut proposal), Norquist also leant his support. He said that $1.2 billion plan would make Missouri an “economic leader in the region, and added if “Gov. Nixon’s veto is not overridden, lawmakers in Jefferson City would essentially be telling Missouri families and businesses to take a hike to greener pastures like Kansas, Iowa, or Oklahoma.”

The trio’s first event will take place at 10:30 a.m at the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, followed by a 1:30 p.m event in Springfield at the United for Missouri office.

Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon will be in Springfield himself on Monday for an unrelated event, followed by an event in Savannah, Mo., Monday night with school boards from across the region touting his opposition to the bill.
