JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri’s first female Speaker of the House Catherine Hanaway is looking to shatter another glass ceiling: Becoming the first female governor.

In a statement Monday, Hanaway announced her intention to seek the Republican nomination for governor in 2016. Her announcement comes months after Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster announced his own 2016 intentions.

“Missourians will face a stark choice in 2016. The polices of Barack Obama and Chris Koster have resulted in less economic activity, less control over our healthcare and, for some of our communities, a broken educational system,” she said in a statement. “We can no longer sit idly by as the de-facto Democrat nominee continues to raise money and build his organization. I am starting now so that we can build the largest and best grassroots campaign in Missouri history.”

Hanaway is the only Republican to have announced so far, more than two years ahead of the primary election. State Auditor Tom Schweich, a Republican up for reelection this year, is also considering a run.
