Moon considering filing articles of impeachment against Nixon over special election delays

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Rep. Mike Moon, R-Mt. Vernon, said Monday he planned to file articles of impeachment against Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon over delayed special elections for vacated seats in the legislature.

Moon, who was elected in a special election last year, told House Republicans during a private caucus meeting that he felt it was his “duty” to his constituents to pursue file the articles and that he did not feel like he could seek reelection, otherwise, according to Republican sources familiar with Moon’s remarks.

Moon, when asked, said he would not address the issue further until the articles of impeachment were filed, but did confirm it was his intent to do so.

Nixon waited months to call special elections in three vacated House seats (one that was open for seven months) and has yet to call a special election for the open 22nd Senatorial District. Citizens in the 120th House District, vacated by Rep. Jason Smith when he was elected to congress, were suing Nixon over the delayed call.
