JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon said Thursday if the charges against state Rep. Steve Webb, D-St. Louis, are true, he should step down from his seat.

“That is moving very quickly,” said Nixon, a fellow Democrat. “Clearly, if those charges are accurate, he should not continue to serve.”

The charges issued against Webb last week include a felony stealing charge for allegedly soliciting campaign funds under a false premise for personal use, and seven misdemeanor charges for separate alleged violations of Missouri Ethics Commission Rules governing campaign finance.

House Minority Leader Jake Hummel, D-St. Louis, said last week Webb should resign from the House. Hummel said Webb had told him he would resign, to the point where his office had begun drafting a resignation letter for Webb, but ultimately changed his mind.

Webb, himself, has yet to publicly weigh in on the charges. His lawyer, Paul D’Agrosa, said repeatedly Webb would issue a statement last week, but he has yet to weigh in.
