— Ahead of the Missouri Republican Party’s annual statewide gathering this weekend, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Sarah Steelman is launching her first television ad at the end of the week.

In the new ad, reported first by POLITICO, Steelman takes direct aim at her primary opponent U.S. Rep. Todd Akin’s base: Social conservatives.

The spot focuses on U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill’s support for the Obama administration’s new rule that all insurance plans — including those written for religious institutions — include coverage for contraceptive services.

“It is a slap in the face for religious freedom, and another disastrous byproduct of Obamacare. Worst yet: Claire McCaskill has agreed with him,” Steelman said, in a 30 second spot featuring her looking directly into the camera. “I don’t. This rule must be overturned and Obamacare must go.”

Steelman’s ad is scheduled to begin its two week statewide run on Friday on Fox News Channel, Steelman’s campaign confirmed to PoliticMo.

Steelman is the second Republican contender to air a television ad this cycle. Her other opponent, St. Louis businessman John Brunner, has spent more than $700,000 on TV ad time.
