— Missourians looking to the state’s official website to find details about personalized license plates or upcoming tax filing dates were surprised Thursday morning to find what loaded at “MO.gov”.
Activists apparently seeking to draw attention to the violence in Syria and potential American involvement hacked the state’s main website Thursday morning, posting graphic images of children in war zones.
“Now you are talking about Syria and mass killing there,” text on the site said. “Why don’t you just look at your self? see what … you did in Iraq and other Mulsim [sic] Countries.”
Within minutes of the site going up, state officials took the entire website offline for more than half an hour.
“While the official website was defaced, neither the state nor its data were accessed and the network remained secure,” said a spokeswoman for the Office of Administration.
The department is currently investigating how the individuals were able to hack the website.
