— U.S. Rep. Todd Akin has the fullest war chest in the battle for the Republican nomination to take on U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill.

Akin’s campaign will report of $231,527 in individual contributions from more than 1,100 supporters, adding up to nearly $1.16 million cash on hand, according to campaign finance documents.

His cash on hand number tops both former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, who had more than $570,000 available, and St. Louis businessman John Brunner, who has less than $210,000 available.

“Congressman Akin and all of us on the campaign team are thrilled to have such strong grassroots and financial support from a wide range of contributors,” said Akin campaign spokesman Ryan Hite. “Akin’s strong message of returning fiscal sanity to Washington and removing the roadblock of a Democrat-controlled Senate is obviously resonating with Missouri voters.”

Akin also tops both of his Republican opponents in individual contributions, but Brunner led him in total contributions, thanks to the aid of a $1.03 million check he wrote to his own campaign. Steelman was at the bottom of the list, raising less than $84,000 in the same fundraising period.

Meanwhile, McCaskill, their mutual opponent, raised nearly $1.4 million in the same period, adding up to $5 million on hand heading in to next November.
