— A tentative deal between Ford Motor Company and the United Auto Workers union could mean a $1.1 billion investment and 1,600 new jobs in the Kansas City area.

The deal — subject to approval by the UAW — would mean Ford investing in the the company’s Claycomo plant in the Kansas City area, where the company is developing new generations of cars.

Gov. Jay Nixon, who called a special session of the General Assembly last year to pass legislation encouraging Ford to maintain and invest in the Kansas City plant, said the Tuesday announcement was historic.

“On day one as Governor, I made it clear that bringing next-generation automotive production to Missouri would be a top priority for my administration,” Nixon said. “[The] announcement is the culmination of more than two years of negotiations between my administration and Ford, and is a strong sign that Missouri will be a manufacturing state for generations to come.”

Nixon pledged to continue to work with both parties to bring more automotive jobs to the state.
