Lembke, Nieves hope to reject “as many federal funds as they can”

– Following their effective filibuster against accepting extended federal unemployment insurance, State Senators Brian Nieves and Jim Lembke plan to do attack additional federal funding.

This time, PoliticMo has learned the filibuster duo will seek to “reject as many federal funds as they can,” likely including health and education funds.

“These senators are voicing the concern many of us have – that the federal government is living outside its means and our nation’s debt, currently above $14.2 trillion, is putting the America our parents and grandparents fought for in jeopardy for future generations,” a State Senate aide with knowledge of the announcement told PoliticMo Tuesday night.

Nieves said and Lembke offered Nixon a deal that would scrap projects like weatherization and high speed rail, in exchange for dropping their filibuster, but the Governor apparently declined.

During a press conference earlier this week, Nixon criticized the Senators for allowing the funding to expire.

“The fact that this deadline was allowed to pass and will have direct implications on Missouri families and on the Missouri economy concerns me deeply,” Nixon said.

Missouri was the only state to reject extended funding or unemployment insurance, and could be one of just a few to reject other federal funds if the two senators are successful.

“Our federal delegation need to hear from the patriots. Missouri is sending back the money you borrowed from China,” Lembke wrote to followers last Friday. “Pay down the debt!!! Quit sending us money you do not have, live within your means.”

Further explanation is expected during an official announcement at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
