(SPRINGFIELD, Mo.) Congressman Roy Blunt distanced himself from Paul Ryan’s “Roadmap for America’s Future” at a stop in Springfield Tuesday.
“Paul Ryan’s plan is not a legislative plan, it’s his proposal,” Blunt said. “I support getting spending under control. And that doesn’t mean I support Paul Ryan’s plan.”
Blunt said, instead, “I’m the guy who led the fight for ten years to get the so called mandatory spending under control and we cut it by 40 billion dollars.”
Ryan’s plan, which proposes to privatize social security, is having a tough time gaining momentum in this election year, where republicans feel vulnerable on making changes to social security – a program used by over a million Missourians.
The Springfield News-Leader reported in March of 2005 that “Blunt favors personal accounts that would allow workers to invest up to 4 percent of their salary in a diversified, low-cost mutual fund of stocks and bonds,” something similar to Ryan’s proposal.
Linden Zakula, spokesman for Robin Carnahan for Senate, said yesterday, “Congressman Roy Blunt has spent the last 14 years in Washington raiding the Social Security Trust Fund, cutting hundreds of billions from Medicare, and promoting risky Social Security privatization schemes.”
Zakula says Carnahan “has pledged to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare and help ensure retirement security for our seniors.”
Blunt did say he thought there will be something like a renewed ‘Contract with America’ out of republicans this fall. “The house leaders are working on that, I don’t know if there’s a similar thing coming out of the senate. But this is an election where the choices are pretty startling, pretty quick.”
“Robin Carnahan is for the $800 Billion stimulus package plan, I think it’s a huge waste of money,” Blunt said. “Robin Carnahan said she would have voted for the senate health care bill – I did everything I could to try to stop it.”
